VIS Rocks

I used to play guitar..and loved it to bits. I had the most massive fear of playing in public, but every year VIS Rocks would come around and I’d find myself centre stage once again with a spot light shining in my face, the butterflies zooming around my stomach and my mouth dry with nerves. The buzz is unexplainable. For some reason in the past few weeks I’ve been missing my guitar more than usual and wish I was in the midst of rehearsals and sound checks for the annual concert…but of course I’m in Leeds, and not Vienna. Bummer. All is not lost however, Oli and I may find somewhere here to play our music if we can get a band together…

The two most recent sounds I’ve posted are the ones I want to play most…but although they suit VIS Rocks, there is probably no where here that they would work.

Foo Fighters

I’ve always been a fan of ‘real’ music. Music that has instruments, with people singing and transferring their energy and love of the music to whoever is listening…Whether it be 5 around a camp fire or 10,000 at a huge concert.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t like house or minimal..electro or drum and bass…but there is nothing quite like real live music. I recently watched a documentary on the Foo Fighters, how they came together, the changes they’ve made over the years, and most importantly their music. This song struck a chord with me (excuse the pun), as it goes back to the kind of music that I listened to before the wave of electronic music swept into my life…before the clubbing, the drinking, the drugs.

Foster the people

“All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,

You better run, better run, outrun my gun.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,

You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.”

Easter

In exactly 3 weeks I’m off with around 600 other Leeds students to Val Thorens…I can hardly contain myself. It’s been a year since I last skied (Kitzbuehel, see the photo above I took) and I can’t wait to be on my skis again. After living in Austria for the best part of 10 years, I’m used to skiing every other weekend in the winter…and then on the glaciers through the summer. I’m craving the mountain air, waking up to sunshine and a fresh layer of snow, that feeling of being the first person down a freshly bashed piste in the morning….Skiing is good for the mind and the soul.

A couple of my friends and I have opted for the upgraded ski pass, giving us access to over 600km of slopes…with the 250cm of snow on the mountain it’s going to be a good week.

Powder snow skiing is not fun.  It’s life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality.  ~Dolores LaChapelle

9gag

A lot of the time 9gag is full of copied posts which weren’t funny or interesting first time round..let alone 5th or 6th. Every once in a while though, some brilliant posts appear, of things I’d never had seen otherwise…especially adverts from different countries. Here are a couple which I think are absolutely brilliant…

p.s. the Axe ad is response to the Old Spice ads

Where I need to be

Before coming to uni I went through the biggest mental dilemma..to uni or not to uni, that is the question. Although I knew with 100% certainty I needed a degree, I wasn’t sure whether England was where I wanted to be…In dorms with people fresh out of school, where people go out with the sole aim of getting as smashed as possible as cheaply as possible. It’s not really my kind of scene…but I came to Leeds with an open mind, knowing that there will always be other options if I decided I couldn’t stand it.

Its a few months in now and I think, as Douglas Adams said, “I’ve ended up where I needed to be”. Not necessarily where I should be, or I thought I wanted to be…but at this moment in time it’s where I needed to be. My older brother once said I was born with the maturity of a 28 year old..so maybe it’s healthy for me to let off some steam for a couple of years and be a teenager again.

KEEP CALM

“KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON”

When did the obsession with the iconic sign begin? And will someone please tell me when it will end!
Wherever you look there is an adaption of the sign, from advertisements, to promotion slogans, to student bedroom walls. I’m not joking when I say 80% of the student bedrooms I’ve been into have had at least one adaption in poster form. I’m not the biggest fan of them…but I’ve seen some funny ones along the way. Here are a couple…

I will sheepishly admit that I have the last one on my own wall…although it’s less than A4 so doesn’t really count (or so I tell myself)
